#223 – Dinny McMahon (Trivium China): Why China Is Really Two Economies

August 19, 2026
August 19, 2026

China is exporting more than ever, competition at home is intensifying, and domestic consumption remains weak. How do these developments fit together?

Our guest is Dinny McMahon, Head of China Markets Research at Trivium China and author of China’s Great Wall of Debt. He previously spent a decade as a financial journalist in China, including as Banking and Finance Correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.

We discuss why the financial crisis many expected never materialized, why Chinese manufacturers are increasingly expanding overseas, and why Beijing is not simply putting more money into consumers’ hands. We also look at de-risking, China’s growing industrial strength and what all of this means for international companies.

Dinny describes China today as two economies at once: one incredibly strong, the other incredibly weak.
